Barong & Kris Dance at Batubulan
There isn't much you have to know to appreciate the Barong and Kris Dance,
performed daily in Batubulan Village in Bali. Like just about everything in
Bali, the Barong and Kris Dance tells the story of a struggle between Good and
Evil, based on Hindu's Philosophy.
Arts & Handicraft Center at Celuk
Northeast of Denpasar, the village of Celuk is noted for its silver and gold
works of jewelry in various styles. Celuk as an art center , where gold and
silversmiths display the skills they learned form their forefathers.
Wood Carvings at Peliatan
The fine art of local woodcarvers started a new style of wood carving producing
such things as fruits, flowers and trees in their real shapes and colorings.
Balinese paintings at Ubud
The center of Balinese painting, Ubud's Museum "Puri Lukisan" has a permanent
collection of modern works of Balinese art dating from the turn of the
century. There are also several art galleries and homes of famous artists
here, including that of Dutch-born Hans Snel and the American Antonio Blanco.
The "young artist" style now popular in Balinese painting was introduced by
the Dutch painter Arie Smith. In the past, other foreign painters inspired
Balinese artists to adopt western techniques but traditional Balinese
paintings are still made and sold. Another museum called "Neka Museum" has a
wide collection of paintings both by Indonesian as well as foreign artists who
used to live in Bali.
Lake & Mount Batur at Kintamani
The village of Batur was formerly sited in the Batur crater until a violent
eruption of the volcano in 1917 and again in 1926. The village was relocated
to the crater rim and the surviving shrine was placed in the new temple Pura
Ulun Danu. This temple is of considerable importance and is one of Bali's nine
directional temples. The villages of Batur and Kintamani now adjoin each
other. The spectacular views are well worth a visit and for those more
energetic, the climb up Gunung Batur is well worth the effort and affords
spectacular views of sunrise and sunset from the top.
Holy Spring Temple at Tampaksiring
Tampaksiring is a town in central Bali that is less a tourist area and more a
point of interest, because of the State Palace resort. If you wish to go there
(and you normally can), it is definitely wise to have a local go with you, as
the government still uses the Presidential Palace to welcome and entertain
state visitors. The Holy Spring Temple located right below the State Palace.
The holy spring in the temple's inner courtyard is said to have magical
curative powers. Nearby bathing pools have cool clear water pouring from mossy
spouts. The Temple grounds were recently opened for tourists interested in
bathing in the spring water.
